First GSM-R call on the National Railway Network

Meeting the railway interoperability policies of the European Community, REFER Telecom made its first call on the GSM-R network (GSM for Railways) on the Cascais Line section, the first railway line to use digital network mobile coverage.
The GSM-R network project is a milestone in the development of Railway Telecommunications in Portugal, since its implementation will improve the quality of voice and data communication between trains and the Operating Control Centers, as well as the development of new services aimed at railway safety and the optimization of traffic.

The GSM-R network differentiates itself from other mobile networks as it is a closed network, operating on exclusive frequencies, with own terminal equipment and specific functions for railway operations.
